Happy (Belated) Halloween!

Hello friends and family!  I hope you had a fantastic Halloween like we did!  I have always enjoyed Halloween...decorating the house, making a costume, trick or treating (even though I'm not a candy person), and always trying to win Most Original Costume at the local costume judging contest.  Since our apartments were kind of small, I never got to decorate for Halloween.  Now that we have a house, I dragged Ben out the first weekend of October to buy decorations!  I got a few things and I will get to keep building my collection every year!

One of my favorite things about being a first grade teacher is having an excuse to dress up for Halloween and have my students think I am totally awesome!  My team always tries to do a team costume and this year, we were Minions from the movie, Despicable Me.  If you haven't seen it, you should!  It's an adorable movie and the minions make you want to have one of your own!  If you don't know what a minion is, here is what one looks like:

And to see how awesome they are, check out this youtube video: Best Minion Scenes

So I went to the thrift store a few times to find a yellow hat, yellow sweatshirt, black gloves, and a pair of overalls.  I also used pipe cleaners, black elastic, and two pieces of PVC pipe from Lowes.
After washing everything, I used a sharpie to make the logo on the front of the overalls and then spray painted the pipe to be silver.

Here are the two pieces of pipe for the goggles.

And here they are after I spray painted them and glued them together.  Then I glued the elastic on and had some sweet Minion goggles!  I also cut tiny holes in the yellow hat and pushed pipe cleaners through it for the hair.  And here is the final product!

Pretty close, right?  And in case you were wondering, each student had to come up with a vocabulary word to describe their costume, which is why I have the word goofy on my shirt.

Here is the first grade team!  I am third from the left.  The students thought we were amazing!  My students were most amazed that I had made the costume myself instead of buying it.  Come to think of it, I don't think I've ever bought a costume.  I always made it with my mom and dad.

I wore my costume to hand out candy to our trick or treaters.  Ben was at class so it was just me! Being in a house now, we finally have trick or treaters!  I sat on our front stoop with the candy, music playing, and Penny.  Riley stayed inside so she wouldn't bark at everyone and scare all the little kids.  Penny barked some but she mostly curled up by the door and watched everybody.  My first two trick or treaters were little minions!  I believe they were 2 & 4 and their mom took their picture with me.

Aren't they adorable?!  The mom was wearing some weird tights that looked like muscles.

It's a little blurry because my handing out candy partner wouldn't sit still for the camera.

And then she stole my chair.

So that was pretty much our Halloween!  We didn't go to any parties or anything.  Before I leave you, I wanted to show you a picture from the outside of my classroom.  Isn't it gorgeous?

And here are some updated pictures of Penny the puppy!
