Never Forget

September 11, 2001 is one of those days that will stay with you, a day that you will always remember, no matter what.  There are days that stick with you, days that you remember every detail, everything you did, and September 11, 2001 is one of those days for me.

I was sitting in my ninth grade world history class with Mr. Fike.  Class was just getting started when our principal, Dr. Thurber, came over the announcements.  We all stopped because announcements during the day was unusual.  Dr. Thurber started speaking in a very grave tone and proceeded to tell us that a plane had hit one of the Towers in NYC and it was believed to be a terrorist attack.  He didn't give many other details since at that time we didn't know anything else.  I remember wondering what the WTC Tower was and what was happening.  After his announcement, my teacher turned on the tv instead of starting the lesson and we all just sat in silence, watching the news coverage.  Several minutes later, we saw the second plane hit.  It was devastating and terrifying to see it happen live.  Soon after, we saw the coverage of the plane hit the Pentagon.  The entire time, we all just sat in silence.  Shortly after, it was announced that we would be having an emergency early dismissal that day.  I remember going to band next, and instead of getting our instruments out, we all just sat together, talking, crying, wondering what was happening.  Thankfully, I didn't know anyone personally at either site but I knew one of my classmate's fathers worked in the towers.  We were all wondering what had happened to him.

We left school early that day.  Everyday I took the bus to the elementary school where my mom worked.  We picked up the middle schoolers first and they knew too.  The bus was so silent that day.  I remember getting off the bus and walking through the halls of the elementary school.  I walked into my mom's classroom and watched all of the fifth graders, happy and excited that they got to go home early for "no reason" and thought to myself, "They have no clue.  They have no idea what has happened.  They shouldn't be laughing."  I could tell that the staff knew, their faces were somber and scared.

Once the students dismissed, my mom, my brother, and I got in the car to head home.  We talked a little bit about what had happened on the way home.  We spent the rest of the evening in front of the TV, just watching the coverage over and over again.  We got a call saying that school was cancelled the next day and went back to watching the coverage.  I remember them saying at one point that where we lived was only seven miles from DC as the crow flies.  It seemed so close and it scared me being that close.  I remember having trouble sleeping that night, thinking about all that I had seen that day.

September 11, 2001 is a day I will never forget.  I will never forget the patriotism that America showed in the following days, weeks, months.  I'll never forget hearing that my classmate's father had died in the WTC towers, or watching the news for another attack, or the first time I went to NYC after 9/11.  It's a day that is now in history textbooks.  It's a day that I wish I could teach my first graders about, but they're too young for that.  It's a day that I will never, ever forget.

Catching Up #2

I'm back to catch-up some more from my weeks away!

I'm pretty sure this is my new favorite picture of the girls.  This was the first time they sat in the shopping cart!  They've gotten really good at sitting up so I decided to try them in the cart.  Costco has room for two kids (THANK YOU COSTCO) so we tried it there and they did great!  I felt like this was as much of a milestone for me as it was for them...no more pushing the stroller with one hand and dragging the cart behind me!

My dad has season tickets to the Ravens game and he gave us the tickets to the pre-season game against the Redskins.  We went with another couple, Ben's old roommate from college and his wife.  And I'm happy to report that the Redskins won, 31-13!

We tried avocado...this was Noelle's reaction.  Natalie loved it of course.

The girls also had their six-month check up at the doctor's office.  They were actually 6.5 months.  They took their shots like champs and only cried for about 30 seconds and moved on!  They were a little fussy later in the day but one does of Tylenol each and they were fine.  Noelle was 13.1 lbs, 25 in long, and her head was 42.5 cm big.  Natalie was 13.4 lbs, 25 in long, and her head was 42.5cm big too.  They're pretty much on par with each other every time.  Their percentiles always crack me up because they're so low.  For twins, the office goes by their corrected age, which is based on their due date.  This means that by corrected age, they are only 5 months, 17 days.  So based on their corrected age, they are 7th and 9th percentile for weight, 25th percentile for height (moved up from 12!) and 67th percentile for head circumference.  Basically they're still pretty small for their age but 1)they're twins and 2) they were late preemies so it's expected.  Their doctor said they're doing great, they're growing and gaining weight and they're healthy!

I think I'm mostly caught up now with the past few weeks so we will see if I can keep up with this!

Catching Up

So I thought I'd take a day or two to catch up on the past few weeks.  We haven't done a whole lot since I've been busy with school starting again, but I always have pictures to share of my girls!

Happy Labor Day!

Happy Labor Day everyone!  I've been MIA on the blog here for the past two weeks and I 100% blame school.  School started on August 17th for me, August 24th with kiddos and I am TIRED!  My class and I are finally settling into our routine at school and Ben, the girls, and I are finally settling into our routine at home.  Having the girls and not being able to be at school as early or as late as I like has given me a lot less time to get work done but we are figuring it out!

Last year's Labor Day was a lot of fun because it was when we publicly announced our pregnancy on Facebook...and lets be real, it's not official unless it's on Facebook ;)  I actually think it was the day after Labor Day but close enough!  We had finally told everyone we had wanted to tell in person and posted our announcement pictures to Facebook with the caption, "Happy Belated "Labor" Day!"

Little did we know, haha!  Enjoy your Labor Day!

Queen Anne's County Fair

Last week, the girls and I met my mom, aunt, and cousins at the Queen Anne's County Fair.  My one cousin Heather brought her almost 3 month old baby so we had lots of babies with us!  My mom's family is from Queen Anne's county and I grew up going to this fair.  I've never lived in the county, but we went every year up until I went to college.  I've actually never been to the county fair of the county I lived in, just this one!  I don't think I've been back since then but it was all pretty much the same!  We had a lot of fun with my cousins and taking the girls there, even though they couldn't really do anything yet.  We kept making comments on all of the fun stuff we would be able to do with them next year!  We checked out (most of) the animals first and then we sat in the pavilion to feed the babies.  After they ate, the grownups ate, and then we checked out some of the displays, the rides, and chatted with people we knew.

Welcome to the fair!

A poster about farming that my cousin made.

Psyched to check out the animals.

Natalie and Noelle with some cows.

And more cows.

Now some llamas!

There were several calves (baby cows for you non-farm speakers) and they were adorable!

Onto the horses!  I texted Ben that the girls now want their own pony but he said it was probably me who wanted the pony, not them.  Not true! :)

This little guy is a Chincoteague pony! Did you ever read Misty by Margurite Henry growing up?  It was one of my favorite books and is all about the Chincoteague ponies!

Getting their picture taken with this guy.  He liked to pose.

Pigmy goats!

My mom and cousin Mitch.

Triplets! (not haha)

The babies were all very interested in each other.  Can you imagine what Christmas will be like?!

I can already picture how much more fun we are going to have next year when they are 18 months...petting zoo, face painting, pony rides, games, animals, so many things to do!
